If you're thinking of visiting La Palma, you're probably wondering where you should stay on the island. Well, the answers are several. In simple geography terms, I prefer the west coast of La Palma. It's the sunniest side of the island, for a start, and offers some pretty amazing sunsets. Other parts of the island are plunged into shadows in the late afternoon as the sun dips down below the peak of the Caldera, which I don't like. Looking along the west coast, you'll find lots of accommodation around Tazacorte and it's port, Puerto Tazacorte, and also a couple of kilometres further south in Puerto Naos. I like to travel around the island when I'm there, and ready access to the roads cutting north, south and east across La Palma make Tazacorte and the surrounding areas the perfect choice for me, and so that's where I normally stay.
If you're planning a holiday in La Palma, the best type of accommodation to look for is a private holiday villa, or holiday apartment. There are plenty of them in the area and they offer much better value for money than the average hotel. There are a few hotels on La Palma, several used by package tour companies such as Thompsons, if that's what you want, but you'll be totally removed from the Canarian culture.
In both Tazacorte and Puerto Naos you'll find holiday apartment blocks near the beach. They're generally low cost and conveniently located, often with a swimming pool, washing facilities and so on. However, if you're travelling as a small group, say 3-6 people, renting a small Canarian holiday villa is probably a much better bet.
